Meet Rick Mades of Maine Arts Camp in Waterville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Mades.

Rick, please share your story with us.
Maine Arts Camp was established in 2004. I had run a camp referral service for 10 years and created a camp that filled a niche in the industry. Our camp is geared toward creative kids/teens ages 9-16, and has professional instruction from experienced teachers, along with first-class facilities at Colby College. We offer extensive programming in the visual arts, along with theater, music, dance, culinary arts, photography, film making and more. Unlike most camps, we do not have team sports or any type of competition, but like most, we do have camp songs, campfires, fun evening activities and lots of time for our creative campers to make real friendships.

We also offer two 2-week sessions, with each having a beginning and an end. We limit enrollment to 100 campers so that each camper can get into the activities of their choice, along with having strong personal attention in day-to-day camp life.

Has it been a smooth road?
The camp grew exponentially from 2005-2008 until the market dropped. Our enrollment is growing again, after our move to Colby College during the summer of 2017.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our main emphasis is on creating an inclusive community where our creative campers are accepted for who they are. Our staff is proactive in discouraging cliques and bullying. We have an older staff, with many experienced teachers and professionals leading activities, which helps our campers to go beyond their comfort zone. Also, being on a college campus enables our campers and staff to enjoy facilities that would be difficult to replicate at a typical camp. Our strongest areas for activities are in the visual and performing arts, culinary arts, photography, and filmmaking.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
On the campus of Colby College. We expect to max out our enrollment at 100 within the next two summers.
