Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Horner.
Kevin, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
In 1995 I was working in western MA do adventure therapy with youth at risk. In 1998 I decided I needed a change and got a job teaching first canoeing then kayaking for Charles River Canoe & Kayak. There I learned to kayak and eventually got to where I was running their guiding program.
Two years ago I decided to head out on my own and started Cohasset PaddleSports. We focus on clinics in Boston Harbor and the South Shore. That being said we can do clinics anywhere if people want to stay close to home.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
There are always struggles when starting a company of your own. I’ve been lucky to have friends and family that have been a huge help.
Please tell us about Cohasset PaddleSports.
Cohasset PaddleSports focuses on four aspect of kayaking:
•Tours – we do guided tours of Cohasset Harbor and out to Minot’s Light. Some of these are sunset tours while others are in the middle of the day.
•Instruction – we offer kayak instruction at all levels. From the person who is just getting started on protected waterways to the person who wants to feel more comfortable in dynamic water.
•Coaching – coaching is different from instruction in that it is a long term
relationship. If you want to get to a certain level a year from now or always wanted to paddle a certain area, our coaching program is for you. We will start with a preliminary lesson to get an idea of where you’re at then come up with an action plan to get you to your goal.
•Certification – all of our instructors are certified by the American Canoe Association (ACA). If you’re looking to get certified to be a Trip Leader or Instructor, our program can help you.
We specialize in rough water skills, but we love showing folks the basics as well.
Pricing:
- $125 for day trips
- $75 for tours
- $65 per hour for private instruction
- $25 for boat rental when doing a trip
- $25 for rental of cold-water gear if needed
