Today we’d like to introduce you to Roberta Black.
Roberta, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
In June of 2012, I followed in my mother’s footsteps by becoming a Justice of the Peace for the State of Massachusetts. My mother owns a chapel in Quincy and at first, I started by doing weddings she was unavailable for. In 2013 as I got more comfortable performing weddings, I decided to build my own website to create an online presence for myself.
As I continued to do more and more weddings each month I started to find out how much I like helping other people through one of greatest, yet most stressful life events. At this point, I decided to also become a Certified Life and Wellness Coach. This certification helps me to help my couples as well as other individual clients to organize their daily lives and to help them achieve their goals towards self-satisfaction.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I don’t think anyone’s career journey is a smooth ride. I can’t complain though as it was easier for me to jump into the weddings because my mother had become a pro over her past ten years of experience. However, I can still remember my first few weddings and how nervous I was. As one of the youngest Justices of the Peace in the state, I almost felt undermined, especially when the couples were older than me. As I did more weddings I became more comfortable in my position, however, I still get that little bit of stage fright right before a big wedding, I mean it can be a lot of pressure to be the most important part of someone’s BIG day.
Becoming a life coach was something I never really thought of doing until I started performing weddings. When I first started certification courses I was overloaded with so much information it was tough to decide exactly how I could put this to use within my profession. As I took more courses I started to realize how important it was for someone to be just as in love with themselves as they were with their partner. As of now, I am currently studying the practice of Relationship Coaching in hopes of helping couples after their wedding day is over.
