Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadia Alawa.
Nadia, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
NuDay Syria was founded in February 2013 by me in response to the humanitarian disaster unfolding inside Syria. I was determined to make a difference for mothers and children affected by the crisis and enable them and other vulnerable populations such as handicapped, wounded, and elderly people to be able to stay within the borders f the home country and live there dignified. I also wanted to build bridges of love and understanding from families here in the US to families inside Syria.
The motto of NuDay Syria is One Person at a Time, One Humanity Closer and every single day we renew our intentions to empower and aid with dignity – and work towards that goal. NuDay Syria is a very busy and active organization that is firmly grounded in its mission and we have been running since NuDay was founded. Being a woman building an organization from scratch, all that multi-tasking and improvisation that you learn as a mother daily come in handy.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are always struggles and road bumps, but that’s part of any focused effort that you do. A most recent example of an issue we have had was to find a new warehouse for our NuDay Syria container efforts. It took three months to find a location, weeks of negotiations, and over a month of finalizing moving in. This is not to count the separate grant-searching and donor-requesting efforts to get the funds to pay for the first year of rent.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about NuDay Syria – what should we know?
NuDay Syria is an international non-profit. Our mission is to empower and aid mothers and children inside Syria with dignity. I am known for being a woman business focused on other women and for getting things done and results.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Determination, hard work, and high ethics.
