Today we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Alessandro.
Valerie, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up I was always creative. When I discovered I was good at doing my friends hair for prom, I knew I had a lead into my future and went to beauty school after high school. From there I busted my butt assisting at a couple different salons in Boston until I officially became a stylist on the floor. I traveled to New York and Los Angeles to take cutting, coloring, and styling classes determined to learn everything I could. Even to this day I think it is so important to educate yourself on upcoming trends. Clients rely on us to create a look for them to express themselves.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s tough in the beginning. Being an assistant, building your clients and making a name for yourself can be frustrating. But if you stick with it, the hard work you put in really does pay off.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Valerie Alessandro Hair Stylist story. Tell us more about the business.
Right now I work out of Salon Viari in Malden, 10 minutes north of Boston, cutting and coloring hair behind the chair. I also freelance and travel to do hair for fashion shows, special events, photo shoots and weddings. The weddings I’ve done for clients are great because they trust you to be a part of their special day. Not to mention some of the gorgeous locations I get to see. The fashion shows are so exciting. I’ve participated in Boston Fashion Week and just did my third season of New York Fashion Week. Being a part of the fashion world is such an amazing experience, your helping these designers bring to life their vision for us to read in Vogue. The road of a hairdresser can take you anywhere you choose, and I’m eager to explore what else I can get my hands into. In a limitless business, I’m always pushing myself to reach higher goals and I’m having fun along the way.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I would say I am “lucky” in the sense that I don’t consider what I do “work”, I LOVE what I do!
