Meet Hannah Green of Bull Mansion in Downtown Worcester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Green.

Hannah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I fell in love with this industry at a very young age. My dad being a chef in Las Vegas for many years was definitely what got me interested, but the people I have met along the way have kept me going. I feel as though anyone with family/loved ones in this industry always here them say “don’t get in the restaurant business, you’ll have no life!”, or “you don’t want to open a restaurant, it’s too much work”. But, my Dad never said any of that, he always encouraged me into this industry and I’m so glad he did.

From the beginning of my high school career I focused in Culinary Arts at Blackstone Valley Tech, which really helped me shape my professional career from the beginning. I was fortunate enough to be involved in SkillsUSA which are competitions for young adults to showcase their skills, and start to make a name for themselves. After competing and winning various culinary competitions, I got a taste of what it was like to succeed in this industry and I vowed to myself I’d never stop climbing my personal “success” ladder, always pushing myself to be better at what I do and to never stop learning. During this time, I also got my first “real” job working as the assistant manager of Pecorino Cheese Shop in Grafton, MA for a woman who truly changed my life. She taught me the value of good customer service. To not just listen to what a guest is saying, but to actually hear them, anticipate their needs, and ensure that you give them an experience that they can’t get anywhere else. Something I use every single day.

After high school I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Hospitality Management from Endicott College. During this time I had the time of my life living abroad in Italy, and traveling through Europe to see the different types of hospitality around the world. This was so valuable to me because it really let me focus in on which part of the industry I wanted to pursue.

Once I had finally decided I wanted to work in restaurants, I was blessed to discover Bull Mansion was opening last September of 2016. Being able to open this restaurant with the owners from the beginning was such a valuable experience for me. I am so lucky to be a part of the amazing team we have here, and every day I come into work I’m super excited to learn from my staff and our customers!

Has it been a smooth road?
Absolutely not! I don’t think that word exists in the hospitality industry in general. There are always changes, challenges to concur, issues to deal with. After all, this industry is about interacting with people, their emotions, and rolling with the punches!

But…by far one of the most interesting challenges so far was the live bat flying around our dining room during dinner service. We caught him though and released him unharmed!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Bull Mansion story. Tell us more about the business.
Bull Mansion is truly a special venue in Massachusetts, and I’m not just saying that because I work here! To start, there is such incredible history within this building. It was built in 1876 when Daniel Wesson (from Smith and Wesson Firearms) had it built for his daughter Sarah as a wedding gift. After that, it was donated to the Grand Army of the Republic and how houses the names of soldiers on plaques that line our ballroom walls. Its spectacular! Everything has been impeccably kept, and you really can feel the historic magic throughout every room.

But besides the fact I think we’re beautiful, I love what we are bringing to our community. Every day we strive to be a place where anyone and everyone feels welcome and can enjoy our food, entertainment, and culture. I think the fact that we have a little something for everyone is what sets us apart from others. We are always having some type of live music, show, dinner special, or just something fun and random for people to enjoy. Some of the best ones are definitely our Pot Pie Tuesdays, Dollar Oyster Wednesdays, and my personal favorite, our infamous Haunted Speakeasys!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I think this industry will never stop growing, especially with all of the incredibly talented and creative people that are in it. In the next 5-10 years I expect (and hope!) more and more restaurants to shift towards supporting their local farms and communities.
