Meet Kate Flock of Kate Flock Photography in Roslindale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Flock.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kate. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My father is an artist and designer, and my mother and stepfather worked as printers at the Detroit Free Press. So from my teens, I wanted to work as a journalist, and photojournalism came quickly after. In college, I took some classes in J-school, but became interested in politics and earned my degree in Political Science. And then, of course, after I graduated I realized that photojournalism was what I really wanted to do.

So I managed to get a photo tech job at Community Newspaper Co., where I had the incredible fortune to learn on the job from some truly gifted photographers. They taught me how to see. Over time, I branched out, and started my own business, focusing on nonprofits and NGO’s, universities, and the arts.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Each day brings its own challenges, but that’s a good thing. I did have one particular obstacle early on, in fact just as I determined to make my career as a photographer. I had a small stroke which affected my sight, obstructing a large portion of my field of vision. I didn’t know if I’d ever regained my vision or certainly photograph again. But I was inspired by the great photographer Albert Watson to keep hope and keep shooting. That was the start of my interest in healthcare, and led to one of my first long-term projects, about a school for children with brain injuries.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Kate Flock Photography – what should we know?
Visual storytelling is at the heart of my business. Clients call me when they are looking to create a narrative, highlight a relationship, or just capture the spirit of their community. I have a lot of experience in sensitive situations, which can be especially valuable. My news experience brings me active and high-profile assignments and allows me to excel at event coverage as well. I’m especially proud of the work I’ve done in Haiti, most recently with the nonprofit Hearts For Haitian Humanity, founded by a dear friend.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My husband is a real partner, from lending a critical eye as I edit to engineering and building equipment setups, but his moral support is paramount. I owe many thanks to my mentors, David DelPoio and Winslow Martin (check them out!) And I’m so happy to have worked with my client Hebrew SeniorLife, for several years, they are a fantastic organization and do such noble work for the senior community.
