Meet Stephanie Baynes of Marshes, Fields & Hills in Pembroke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Baynes.

Stephanie, please share your story with us.
As a kid, I spent my summers at Humarock Beach on the coast of the South Shore in Massachusetts and we moved there as a family in 2009. Always a craft enthusiast, my creative pursuits have since carried a flair of that coastal living. During the summer of 2012, I designed a pillow sham with a canvas fabric and personalized it by painting the name of our family’s favorite beach: Humarock. Here at MFH, we believe in the beauty of local communities far and wide. Each of our handmade home goods is created, customized, assembled and shipped in the USA. Our fabrics are sourced from India, where we’ve built personal relationships with vendors who create work and economic opportunity for women.

Has it been a smooth road?
Ha. Hardly. The inception of MFH was really a mistake and the initial product was the result of a sewing class I was taking where my my first project was the design of a pillow sham with a painters’ tarp, canvas fabric. I cut the tarp by hand and then sewed a 20”x20” sham. With some cheap paper stencils taped together in the name of our favorite beach, I hand-painted in between the lines on to the sham. A week later, the owner of our local Marshfield Hills General Store noticed it on my couch and suggested she sell them in her shop. Needless to say, this initial process was not scalable! I ramped up quickly, but everything was initially done alone and by hand.

Obviously, our manufacturing process has developed exponentially since then, but it has been a laborious and expensive process! I think that the biggest challenge has been migration from a creative hobby to a real business, which requires attention to HR, operations, marketing, technology, and finance. Given that I don’t have a business background, I have relied on my incredible team to take us to the next level, but it has not been without lots of challenges along the way.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Marshes, Fields & Hills LLC – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
