Meet Beth Hylan and Liz Ferreira of The Sweetbay Shop in Wakefield

Today we’d like to introduce you to Beth Hylan and Liz Ferreira.

Beth has had a passion for nature and “curiosities” since she was a little girl. After going to agricultural school for floral design, she opened several small shops when her children were young. After a few adventures being a shopkeeper in other communities, a spot opened in Beth’s hometown of Wakefield. She jumped on the opportunity to “come home” and re-open the Sweetbay Shop with the support of her community.

Having managed several shops for Winston Flowers, daughter Liz was ready to join mom back home. Her two small children are often found at the shop as well.

Has it been a smooth road?
The Sweetbay Shop has had many incarnations throughout the years. Owning and operating a small business, especially retail is no easy feat. We’re happy to finally be in a place that seems right for us and our community. Our town’s support is instrumental to our survival and we’re delighted to be a part of moving our downtown district forward.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Sweetbay Shop story. Tell us more about the business.
Sweetbay is a quaint boutique that specializes in home decor, gifts, and floral design. We create custom floral designs for daily delivery as well as for weddings and events. We are most proud of our relationship with our community. We tailor our inventory to what our clientele is looking for. We enjoy delighting them and helping them make their lives just a little more beautiful. Small shops are a dying breed – we are proud to still be here!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We see more small shops reverting to online businesses. We’ve toyed with the idea as well – but we are hooked on human interactions! Wakefield has become a bustling community of young families moving out of the city. With that comes more support for “shopping small”. It’s kind of a fun shift and mindset to witness first hand. In this high-tech and the socially absent world, we pride ourselves on staying connected.

Hi Beth…If I want ordinary I can go to Amazon. I shop with you at Sweet Bay regularly as I love your variety and can always find a gift for someone else or something for my own home. Thanks for sharing the article you were honored to have published in Boston Voyager. I’ll be in soon as I need a few things for Christmas and know I can fine something different to bring to a dinner party for the hostess. Thanks and Happy Holidays. Genie
