Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Wasik.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My son Oscar had the idea for the business after having worked for a couple of local moving companies. Almost 11 years ago, we started the company with one truck. We worked out of our basement. My brother William came on board from the start. His abilities as a mechanic have enabled us to save money and keep our trucks in good running condition.
Soon we became so busy that we hired a full-time salesperson. The slow season (winter) was a struggle for the first couple of years. I did have to put more cash into the company to keep things running. After the first 3 years, I no longer needed to add money to keep our cash flow positive. We rented a small warehouse/office space in Cambridge and hired a full-time estimator.
Because we offer storage, and some of our customers stay in for long periods of time, we eventually ran out of storage space. I found our current location here in Newton, right alongside the Mass Pike. It gives us great visibility, as well as a much larger warehouse, and more offices. We hired a 2nd full-time salesperson, as well as a full-time warehouse manager/dispatcher.
We have been growing largely due to our amazing group of employees. Many of our movers have been with us for more than 8 years! They know how to provide top notch customer service, and word spreads. My goal is to continue growing while maintaining our personalized service.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been challenges along the way, and I anticipate that that will always be the case. We have been able to handle everything that’s come our way just by keeping everything in perspective. Our number one goal is to keep our customers happy. Everything else we do flows from that.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Oscar’s Moving Company – what should we know?
Oscar’s Moving Company is known for the high caliber of our service. In my opinion, that is the only way to succeed in this business. We provide local and long distance moves – from Boston to San Diego and anywhere in between.
We also provide storage. Many times a customer’s house will sell before they’ve had a chance to find another place. We take away their stress by taking their things into our storage and delivering it back to them when they find their new home.
I am very proud of the fact that we treat all of our employees with respect and fairness. I am also proud of our efforts in the local community to provide employment opportunities to developmentally disabled adults in our offices, and our support of local battered women’s shelters by providing donated furniture, storage, and delivery.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The desire to build something, and the understanding that it’s a long-term game. I feel that almost any obstacle can be overcome with dogged determination. I maintain a positive attitude, and I hope that I instill that sense of positivism in everyone who works here.
