Meet Amy Rockwell of Elevate Health Studio in Bedford

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Rockwell.

Amy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Owning a gym had never been a dream of mine, but I thought it was the right fit at the right time. Fitness has always been a part of my life, playing high school and college basketball and soccer. After college, I continued with fitness as a coach at the middle and high school levels. Then in 2015, I started teaching group fitness classes at a local gym to supplement my part-time teaching position as an enrichment coordinator at a local middle school. It was the perfect blend of my two loves, fitness and teaching. In December of 2015, the owners of the gym mentioned they were closing and looking to sell it to someone. It was a sign. After much thought, I decided to take the leap and I haven’t looked back since. I have now owned the gym for 1 1/2 years.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been an easy 1 1/2 years. Soon after making the decision to purchase the gym, my husband was diagnosed with cancer. In a quick four months, he passed away in July 2016, just two months after I became the owner of Elevate. In addition, my part-time teaching job was moved to full-time. I began working five days a week while running my home (and learning how to run my snowblower for the first time!), raising two girls, Brooklyn (4) and Charlotte (6), and now owning a gym. I began to question whether I had misread the signs. However, I have kept the faith and believe in the gym and the people that are there. It is those difficult times in life where we truly see what is inside us. I have learned that I am strong and have the belief that Elevate will continue to be a success.

Please tell us about Elevate Health Studio.
Elevate Health Studio is a boutique gym that offers a variety of small group classes. personal training, corporate wellness programs, and 24/7 access for members looking to workout when it is convenient for them. We care about each of our members and have the motto, “Some call it a gym, we call it a family.” People who never considered themselves gym-goers, now can’t imagine being part of the Elevate family. My team of exceptional instructors makes classes accessible to all levels. People who have never worked out before feel comfortable working alongside frequent gym-goers.

The sense of community at Elevate is what sets us apart. We organize such things as hikes and hold free community boot camps. We are also involved in giving back to the community. Workout check-ins with the hashtag #elevatecares provide local charities with much-needed donations. In addition, we welcome local organizations to utilize our space for fundraisers.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood was my junior year in high school. My basketball team went undefeated and we won the state championship. I’ll never forget that feeling of accomplishment and pure joy and I treasured being able to share that with my wonderful teammates.
