Meet Wayne Tuiskula of Central Mass Auctions in Boston and Worcester

Today we’d like to introduce you to Wayne Tuiskula.

Wayne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Selling antiques began as a hobby over 30 years ago. I sold items at the Brimfield Antique Show, as well as other antique shows and antique shops. I also ran estate sales. I started Central Mass Auctions in 2002.

The business began by running live antique estate auctions. We continue to run live auctions for more valuable antiques and collectibles. We have expanded our services to include online estate auctions, estate sales and personal property.

We have locations in Boston and Worcester and cover all of Massachusetts and surrounding states.

Has it been a smooth road?
There were many competitors when I created the company. We pictured items from our auctions on the web when few other local auction houses were using the internet. This helped gain us exposure. Despite this, we still sometimes struggled to obtain the quality consignments we desired for our auctions.

We have scaled back live auctions to 3 or 4 times a year. By running less, we are now able to offer higher quality items to bidders. We also began running online auctions inside the estate and offering appraisal services. Our business has grown significantly since offering these additional services.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Central Mass Auctions Inc. – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We offer a total solution for estate personal representatives, attorneys and other who need to sell personal property. We sell the most valuable items at auction. We offer a wide range of antiques and collectibles from precolonial antiques to 1960’s and older comic books and baseball cards.

We offer specialty auctions for large collections of any kind. We sold a radio collection in Carlisle, MA that brought nearly half a million dollars. We sold the credentials of famous crime fighter, Eliot Ness, for $46,000. Wayne Tuiskula had originally appraised them when working as a collectibles appraiser for “Antiques Roadshow” on PBS.

Our online auctions may contain antiques, but we typically offer more valuable contemporary items. We’ve sold home furnishings along with more exotic items like a wooden Chris Craft boat, 1969 Volkswagen bug and a World War II aircraft engine. Contemporary furnishings and some antiques and collectibles often sell better at an estate (tag) sale.

Through our network of contacts, we help those who need assistance packing, moving or cleaning out estates.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Boston is an ideal place to be an auctioneer. We may be handling artifacts from the Colonial Era one week and mid-century modern furniture the next week. I feel fortunate to work in area with such rich history.

Like many other area residents, the traffic would be the thing that I like least about the area. It can be difficult to schedule early morning appointments because the traffic can vary so much from day to day.
