Today we’d like to introduce you to Deborah Packard.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My academic training is in urban design. I have worked in a social service agency, for the state of New Hampshire, at an art museum and for a construction company. Although not a trained architectural historian, my work experiences gave me the tools to work in a management role and I’ve learned the preservation aspect on the job.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I think the road has been smooth. I enjoyed each of my positions and also was fortunate to be able to leave when I was ready to move on.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Preservation Worcester story. Tell us more about the business.
Founded in 1969, we are known for being an effective advocate and the sole institution in the city dedicated to historic preservation and excellence in new design. Being a small, grassroots organization, we have been able to accomplish significant successes because of our collaborative spirit, our positive relations within the community and our wonderful cadre of volunteers. We are especially known for our creative events which are never a chicken dinner in a function hall.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We’ve experienced good luck and bad luck. I/we roll with the punches.
