Today we’d like to introduce you to Mahlon Williams.
Mahlon, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
People say everything comes full circle, and the same can be said for me with regards to I Love Boston Sports. I grew up with a love of drawing, art and comic books and like most kids, I started taking an interest in sports, playing every sport imaginable. I found my calling at Wheaton College where I majored in Economics. It was actually a love affair with theater that allowed me to follow my creative side and trust my instincts. I almost had enough credits to do a double major but had the opportunity to graduate with a degree in economics and work on Wall Street. After 15 years in the industry, I felt remorseful about chasing a check and not exploring my creative side. It was finally my wife who pushed me out of an airplane and forced me to construct a parachute on the way down. Not literally of course, but her encouragement to create our first piece “The Boston Tea Party” was the beginning of The Boston Sports Co.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a roller coaster ride. The beautiful part of it is that we created an entirely new form of sports themed art and apparel. We have had the lane of the highway to ourselves but we are now noticing that some of the big licensees are starting to mimic our simpler work. Our more challenging designs require a secret ingredient, and that is what I believe I bring to the table. Myself.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with I Love Boston Sports – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
I Love Boston Sports is the creative force behind unique artwork featuring Boston sports teams and historical moments in Boston history. We offer a truly unique, one-of-a-kind piece of art for Boston sports fans home, man-cave, or office. I Love Boston Sports has four sports art gallery locations including South Shore Plaza in Braintree, Square One Mall in Saugus, Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the Prudential Center both located in downtown Boston. We are most proud of one of our pieces being autographed by the best football coach of all-time because he loved “Crossing the Charles” so much, and we’re equally as proud of one the most prominent NFL team owners who has one of our pieces hanging in his office who also wrote us a letter thanking us. Both hang proudly in our South Shore Plaza location.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
Keep coming up with the most unique pieces of sports art no one has ever seen before that commemorates the accomplishments of Boston’s best sports teams and most prolific athletes. That, and constantly thinking of ways to grow, expand and evolve I Love Boston Sports, especially for Boston sports fans living outside of New England.
