Avi, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I have been an acupuncturist for 27 years. Prior to that I was a software engineer, and before that I was a professional dancer, so I always had an interest in the body and its workings as well as in investigating, analyzing, and precision.
I started going to acupuncture school in San Francisco when I realized that Silicon Valley was being changed by the then new phenomenon of email: people in the software industry stopped communicating with each other in person and opted for the convenience of email at work. I wanted to work with real, live, people.
For 15 years I practiced in San Francisco, specializing in difficult to treat cases such as auto-immune disorders, and helped established various community health projects and integrative centers. I then moved to Portsmouth to enjoy the New England greenery.
25 years ago, I created the Acupuncturists Support Group in order to promote greater knowledge and education for professional acupuncturists so that we can better serve our patients. I had the great opportunity to study with some of the best acupuncture practitioners and teachers, often in small intimate settings, and learning from them hands on.
I have also been studying and practicing in the Buddhist Zen tradition for the past 25 years, adding another dimension to my understanding of the human condition and my ability to help people. I now practice and teach both acupuncture and meditation as paths to healing.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In medicine, we are always struggling to better understand health and disease and ways to affect health. There are many incredible success stories and people who heal, every doctor knows that he or she cannot cure all people. One of the challenges to health care practitioners is to accept that what we do is not an exact science and that we can never fully guarantee the results of treatment, and still proceed to help people.

The Acupuncture Medical Group specializes in difficult to treat cases. I am known as a “no-nonsense,” get good results, in the most efficient manner. I utilize a unique style of acupuncture that is both very gentle on the patient and at the same time highly effective and obtains quick, often instantaneous, results. It combines modern science with ancient Chinese understanding, and relies on confirmation on the body so as to ensure the best results.
The body is a complex organism, and in order to successfully treat current symptoms we often need to address past issues. A shoulder pain that resulted from a fall while skiing can be complicated by say a thyroid condition, and plantar fasciitis can be related to a weak immune system or allergies. I am known for investigating and getting to the root.
But technical expertise is not enough. Compassion, empathy, and understanding are also key ingredients in the healing process, because healing requires space. I provide not just the best in technique, but also real space for healing to occur.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans are to continue treating people and help alleviate suffering in the world in whatever way I can. The world keeps changing and challenges us, and one cannot anticipate what those challenges might be, except to know that they will be there, and to be willing to be there, fully present, for them.
