Meet Connie Miller of Studio Atticus Photography in Arlington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Connie Miller.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Connie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2002, I graduated with a BA in studio art, moved to Boston, and began my career in wedding photography. I have photographed over 350 weddings, and my photographs have been featured in numerous books and magazines including Chris Kimball’s The New Home Cooking, O Magazine, Brides Boston Magazine, The Knot Magazine, Boston Weddings Magazine, and PDN magazine. In 2010, I was awarded “Best of Boston” for wedding photography by The Improper Bostonian.

My work is often described as poetic, emotional, and documentary.

Has it been a smooth road?
When I started my business in my early 20s, I also had to work for other photographers in order to make ends meet. Since I did not have enough money to purchase equipment, my mother bought me my first professional camera and lens. Several years were required to really learn the ropes and create a viable business, but I loved doing it and never found it to be a burden. I love photographing weddings and I adore the freedom that running my own business affords.

Two years ago, I started photographing food professionally in addition to my wedding work. Learning to balance the demands of those very different worlds have been very challenging and fun.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I have been documenting celebrations for over a decade. I was originally trained in black and white film and my photography reflects my fine art background. Rather than imposing a style or formula on my clients, I take a very documentary approach. Emotion and authenticity are what drives my work, and I photograph each celebration in a way that is true to the couple’s personalities.

Many wedding photographers shoot 30+ weddings each season. I have a boutique wedding business and only work with 14-16 clients each year. This allows me to truly get to know my clients, produce the most creative work for their celebrations, and be readily available for each client before, during, and after the wedding day. I pride myself on the customer service, attention, and beautiful products/albums I provide to everyone I work with.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is a wonderful city, and I am grateful that I have been able to make a comfortable living here for many years. I would imagine that the cost of living is certainly difficult for younger folks who are just starting out, but I do think that there is plenty of work to support entrepreneurial photographers in the Boston wedding industry if they possess the proper amount of positivity and tenacity.
