Meet Regina Zinger and Janet Lucio of Hairflo Boutique Salon in Newton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Regina Zinger and Janet Lucio.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Regina and Janet. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Regina: It was always my dream to become a stylist and when I got the opportunity to go to cosmetology school, I took my chance. I started my career working for various salons around Boston, taking classes to improve my knowledge and get as much experience as possible as a colorist. Today I love the creative aspect of my job doing free hand highlights and balayage. Color is my passion for sure!

Janet: I have been in the hair and beauty industry for 20 years. I am an Esthetician by trade and left Ireland for Miami where I started my career working on board luxury cruise liners as a salon and spa manager for 10 years before moving to Boston where I ended up working at a busy established salon for 8 years. All along gaining the experience I needed on the way to open and manage a successful business in this industry.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Regina: For me it has been a tough road. I started working as an assistant and had to work my way up. Everyone starts at the bottom and there is a lot of competition especially in higher end hair salons. Many hairdressers give up along this journey but I stuck to it and over time was able to build a solid following.

Janet: I have to say I enjoyed my road. I traveled the world working in the hair and beauty industry gaining a lot of very valuable experience while on luxury cruise ships and then in Boston I was able to start a family while still working in the Hair and beauty industry. There are always bumps in life but I can’t imagine a life where I wasn’t in this fun and stylish industry.

Hairflo is a full service boutique hair salon: We specialize in organic hair color for a cleaner, healthier and greener you. And yes organic color covers grays beautifully and works just like regular hair color with a vibrant and shiny finish. Seventy percent of U.S. women apply chemicals such as ammonia, resorcinol, and paraphenylenediamine to their heads on a regular basis. In a country where we want organic food, natural skin care, and even sulfate-free shampoo, why are we still OK with bathing our scalps in the harmful chemicals of hair dye?

At Hairflo we believe in exceptional client care and really try to accommodate everyone’s needs. We believe a trip to the salon is a social event and want to make it a happy fun one for everyone. We are a friendly out going team and we take pride in treating our customers like family. Having worked in the industry for a long time, we believe this sets us apart from many salons out there.

Last but not least, we focus on convenience. Our blow dry packages have been very successful and we are introducing some new innovative concepts to make it convenient and affordable for our clients to maintain a fabulous look all year long.

What were you like growing up?
Regina: I grew up In Brazil and some of my favorite memories as a child were spending my summer vacations at my grandparents’ farm enjoying life with my cousins. I was creative early on and studied architecture. But in the end, my dream was to be a stylist and once I moved to the United States that became possible

Janet: I grew up in west Ireland where we were all very free and wild as kids with lots of friends and family.
I always had an interest in clothes, hair and makeup and both my mom and sister were hair stylists. My mom had a hair salon in our house so there was no getting away from it.
