Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Malloy.
Laura, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Working in the commercial interior business for the past 25 years, I have had the opportunity to be involved in creating new spaces as well as historic restoration in both the Midwest and New England.
After graduating from college, I fabricated metal sculptures and began working for a commercial furniture dealership. In 2002, I moved to New Hampshire and started working as a senior interior designer for a large architectural firm. Like many during the recession of 2008, the company downsized and I had to decide what my next step would be. In 2009, Malloy Interiors was formed.
Has it been a smooth road?
My first office was the kitchen table, which lasted for a couple of years. At that point, I decided to make the break and rent space in downtown Portsmouth. It took time to get the business to where it is today and there were challenges along the way. For example, because I was selling a “service” rather than a “product”, I had to convince people to have faith in my skills and give me a chance. How much marketing to do was also a question. How many coffee appointments, after-hour business events and lead groups are required? Although these things are beneficial, what I feel really started the ball rolling was being hired by our first client. They gave us a chance to prove ourselves which helped us get our name out. Another one of our struggles was, do we grow into a larger firm or stay small? We like being a small company and have decided to keep it this way, which allows us to be completely hands-on with every project. This has not stopped us from taking on larger (and multiple) projects as we have talented consultants to source when needed.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a full-service commercial interior design firm and we believe in treating people with respect, honesty, and providing the best service we can. We meet with our clients throughout the planning, development, and construction phases, listening to our clients’ wants and needs and carrying that to completion.
In the office, we constantly bounce ideas off of each other and value each other’s opinion.
Our goal is to make every design different from the last and unique for each client. We never want anyone to walk into a space and think, “this looks familiar”. We draw from all vendors and do not limit ourselves in any way to any particular lines. We want our clients to have the best product at the best price for their project.
Our clients have told us that we “play well with others” and that we are NOT Divas. This is the best compliment we could receive.
Throughout each project, we communicate with the Owner, Developer, Sales team and Contractors and we believe everyone involved contributes to the success of the project.
We are a proud recipient of an AIA-NH Merit award for one of our corporate interior projects.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Portsmouth is perfect for our business. Being located on the I-95 corridor, it allows us to easily work on projects from Portland, ME to New York City, NY. I would recommend Portsmouth to any business who may be starting or relocating. It’s wonderful.
