Meet Barbara Hill of Massage Only in Newburyport

Today we’d like to introduce you to Barbara Hill.

Barbara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was a professional pilot for 25 years, Captain of a
Boeing 727 for a global shipping company at the end of my career. I retired early from flying and decided to pursue another career. I had been a lifelong equestrienne, riding and competing horses since I was a child. I was interested in the holistic modalities (chiropractic and sports massage) that were being used in the horse world these days. I went to massage school (for humans!) and then trained with a top, respected equine Massage Therapist in a specific modality of Sports massage, developed by the late, great Jack Meagher. I spent 6 years honing my craft, working on horses and people. In 2014 I had the opportunity to buy Massage Only, a local business in downtown Newburyport, and jumped on it. I am the fourth owner in over 30 years!

Massage Only is a great local business. The name says it all. We only offer top quality massage from highly trained therapists who love their work and take the therapeutic benefits of massage very seriously.

Has it been a smooth road?
I brought the business into the 21st century and that was a challenge. I bought an online scheduling software, and getting that setup and running was a struggle: a lot of training and technical knowledge. However, it has helped the business immensely!

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Massage Only – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We offer quality massage. No facials, nails or other spa-like services. Just massage. As a result, about 50 % of our clientele are professional men. We give our therapists freedom to manage their schedules, with ample time between clients, so that they are able to perform at their best!

Massage Only encourages and contributes financially to additional training for our therapists. Some of the recent workshops completed: Stabilizing the Core, Orthopedic Massage for Neck and Shoulder Dysfunction and Understanding the Psoas.

I am most proud of our reputation in the area. We are always getting new clients who tell me that someone suggested Massage Only to them! We have worked hard to provide clients with a therapeutic experience in a serene setting. I am also proud of the upgrades I have given the business: online scheduling, a revamped and user-friendly website, all electric lift tables, mini-split AC/heat pumps in each room, new carpeting.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the history and culture of Boston. I think the public transportation is very limited compared to other major cities.

I’m trying to find someone from the Boston area/Maine that does Jack Meagher sports massage on humans. I haven’t been able to run in months because of a hamstring. Thanks rudy
