Today we’d like to introduce you to Shayna Mahoney, John Mahoney.
Shayna and John, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was going to school to be an elementary school teacher, but life circumstances changed that path! While I attended high school and then college classes full-time, I worked for my dad’s countertop company. I received my college degrees in psychology and human development and also attended nutrition school. I learned quite a bit from experience in the business. I gained skills in bookkeeping, sales and management. In addition, I am a holistic life coach who gives women hope to embrace their anxiety and find peace and purpose within!
My husband, John, started working for my dad’s company right after his high school graduation. He started assisting with sales and installations for granite countertops. He was motivated and eager to learn and quickly moved up to a management position since he was good with the customers and knowledgeable. He has also volunteered as a firefighter and EMT since his early 20’s.
We both learned quite a bit at an early age about the remodeling industry, running a business and taking pride in customer service and satisfaction. Life circumstances occurred around the same time the economy took a turn for the worst and a large box store opened nearby, causing my dad to sadly close his business. We had to make some tough decisions at a young age. John and I eventually decided to open our own company with our expanded knowledge and experience with design, cabinetry and flooring. Since then, we have focused on full kitchen and bathroom remodels, yet still, have a passion for stone countertops. We also provide installation for our products.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely been a journey! When we first began in this industry, it was busy and exciting. However, the economy started to decline and we saw things go from great to not so great in a short amount of time. It was terrifying. We had to get creative to continue to develop. So many businesses in our industry were closing and we didn’t want to give up. We stayed positive and kept on learning so we could expand our expertise from countertops to full kitchen and bathroom remodels.
We have learned so much about business, managing projects and employees, marketing, customer service and we continue to learn every day. We appreciate the struggles because they have taught us determination, motivation and that there is no such thing as failure, only feedback.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Emerald City story. Tell us more about the business.
We have a kitchen and bathroom showroom in Plymouth. We carry a variety of countertop, cabinet and flooring samples.
We feel we are unique because we believe in creating a personal touch with our customers. When a customer calls, they know who they will be talking with throughout the process. We do not believe in pushy-sales tactics. Instead, we prefer to guide you in making a decision that is right for you. We truly understand there’s no place like home and want our customers to create a space where they are able to relax and create memories.
Additionally, there are not many kitchen and bathroom remodeling companies that have a showroom and do their own countertop installations. Our in-depth knowledge of stone countertops allows our customers to trust in our abilities since countertops make a project feel whole and complete.
There is so much we are proud of and grateful for at Emerald City! We have a great team who values customer service and we try to incorporate a sense of humor when possible.
We have donated to the Kids Pan Mass Challenge in Plymouth and recently donated fabrication of a quartz countertop to the new Plymouth Recovery Center. We are passionate about philanthropic efforts and hoping to continue to do more in the community.
We also received awards from Houzz, Angie’s List and Cape & Plymouth Business Magazine.
What are your plans for the future? What are you looking forward to or planning for – any big changes?
Good question! We may have hired more help sooner than we did. We grew rapidly and had fear of hiring too many people too quickly. We didn’t want to spend too much money because we wanted to keep our customer’s costs down as well as our overhead. We became a bit overwhelmed at times trying to keep up with all of our quotes and projects. We finally hired more help in our showroom and it has made a world of a difference!
