Today we’d like to introduce you to Chuck McLaughlin.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been a private investigator since I graduated from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1990. I started off like many people in the industry by doing surveillance work. I wanted to learn as much as possible so in my early years I would just hang around the office for free and do anything that was asked of me. My efforts paid off and I soon became the vice president of the firm I was working at.
However, I also realized that if I really wanted to have success in the PI industry I had to strike off on my own. So in 1999 with a newborn, mortgage and about $3000 in the bank I quit my vice president job and started my own company and I have not looked back. I know most books on How to Start a Business will tell you that you need at least 9 months of cost of living saved up before you quit your job to start a business. But I will tell you that desperation leads to inspiration and motivation!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been self-employed for 18 years and I would be lying if I said the road has always been smooth and with no struggles. I feel entrepreneurship is the ability to fail and manage self-doubts while continuing to move forward.
Please tell us about McLaughlin Investigative Group.
McLaughlinPI is a professional private investigative firm. We work throughout New England, nationwide and around the globe. We are in the business of helping people and businesses solve problems and discover answers to tough questions.
I am most proud of two things; One is our global reach to help solve our client’s problems. We have successfully handled cases in over 85 countries. Secondly, is the personal, professional and confidential ways we interact with our clients. Often when a person is hiring a private investigator they are in crisis.
Our ability to listen and be empathic is what sets us apart from others.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Roofing during the summers for my father’s roofing business. It was a great bonding experience and it taught me how to do hard work. It also taught me that I did not want to be a roofer when I grew up!
