Meet Emily Pinney of SYD+SAM in Observatory Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Pinney.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I entered the world of interior design in 2001. After working for several design firms around Boston, I began my own residential design firm Pinney Designs Inc. 7 Years ago. It was always a dream of mine to open a store and SYD + SAM was an idea that followed me through my career. Once I found the right space, I invested the time and commitment that small business requires. After renovations and a LOT of paint, I was able to bring that idea to life.

We opened SYD+SAM in late fall, 2015. The idea behind the store came from my want to create a shop that put products that I loved and worked with from my own experience in the industry in one, beautiful place. It’s not often you find designer products in a small business storefront with a small business philosophy. I believe SYD+SAM changes that / does exactly that.

Has it been a smooth road?
Retail can be hard. It’s also changing. You can no longer implement the old techniques of small business without also investing in the social side of business today. That is how brands are built, it’s undeniable. We’ve learned how important the marriage between keeping the genuine charm of a neighborhood shop and growing its social presence is through our first two years.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
SYD+SAM is a lifestyle boutique that invests in handmade artisans, American made products, and the beauty in well curated decor, gifts, and accessories. We specialize in home decor, particularly influenced by my other business, Pinney Designs Inc. The studio and the shop share the same space and SYD+SAM is a constant source of inspiration for my day to day life as a designer. We’re exceptionally proud of our collection. The products we carry are well thought from start to finish. We love knowing our vendors stories and making that an element of our retail approach. From our design to our seasonal window installation, to our awesome staff and dedication to handmade, sustainable goods, SYD is a shop that you can be surprised by, welcomed, and want to return to.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Our neighborhood, Observatory Hill, once part of Huron Village, and Cambridge as a city wholeheartedly encourages small business in a way that we are so happy to contribute to.
