Meet Mike Schultz of RAIN Group in Framingham

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike Schultz.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Mike. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Most people in the sales effectiveness and training space started off as sellers. I started off immediately in the sales effectiveness space, consulting with large companies on how to make transformational changes in their sales results.

It wasn’t until a few years later that I took over a division of a large training and consulting firm with overall P&L responsibility. I both ran a sales team and was a part of the process for winning our major sales.

After getting my MBA at Babson College, I started RAIN Group with John Doerr. In the early days, we believed that the operation of our industry needed to change, so we started doing research and publishing intellectual capital on what we found. That started our path to writing 4 books translated in 8 languages, publishing over 50 research reports, 30 white papers, 350 articles, and speaking hundreds of times at conferences and corporations around the world.

From the business side, we always focused on investment and growth. We were named to Inc. Magazine’s list of the fastest growing firms in the country and haven’t looked back since.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
If anyone tells you 15 years in business has been smooth all the time, they are lying. We’ve dealt with sickness and family struggles, a major pivot in 2011 where we changed the name and direction of the company, and struggled through the great recession just like everyone else.

I heard once that entrepreneurship is like camping. Looking back it was fun, but it sort of sucks while you’re doing it. Seems true to me.

Please tell us about RAIN Group.
RAIN Group’s mission is to unleash sales potential. Our offerings focus on our proprietary sales training and coaching programs to help sales teams lead masterful sales conversations, build their pipelines, increase win rates, negotiate the best agreements, and drive growth at strategic accounts.

We do this with companies with complex sales, such as technology, financial services, manufacturing and industrial products, hospitality, professional services, and so forth. Our clients include mid-size and large companies like Hitachi, Deloitte, Toyota, Lee Hecht Harrison, Bright Horizons, and hundreds of others.

We work globally from our headquarters in Boston, and have offices in Geneva, London, Mumbai, Sydney, Johannesburg, Toronto, and Bogotá.

What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
I spent most of the last year at Boston Children’s Hospital living full time with my 5 year old son as he waited for and then received a heart transplant. I’m proud of how my company supported me and my family, and banded together to help each other, while I worked when I could – and didn’t work when I couldn’t – from the hospital.
