Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Shuck.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started working at LevelUp when I was a student at Boston University. As a student employee, I had the opportunity to meet the team early on and I realized very quickly how cool the company is. After a crazy interview process, I joined the company full-time after I graduated in May of 2011. My career at LevelUp has evolved as the company has grown and developed. I initially focused on customer acquisition and digital marketing for our counter service product geared towards SMBs, and later shifted to the partnership side of the business where I learned a great deal about the payments industry. As the business moved toward agency clients, like sweet green, my new focus became developing automated and customized ways to ensure our agency clients were leveraging the LevelUp platform to its full potential. I learned SQL on the job and built out the first version of our analytics platform. I also developed automated consulting mechanisms to help show restaurant merchants how to take full advantage of the LevelUp analytics engine. Three years ago I took over the marketing department and was able to build out the content team, which has since evolved into our B2B marketing team, as well as build out our consumer marketing team.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
LevelUp has always empowered employees to tackle challenges, and we are given a great deal of responsibility and ownership of our projects. On the consumer side, we are constantly looking for ways to improve our consumer product and make it really compelling for users. On the B2B side, we are always developing new solutions to meet the ever-changing needs of the restaurant industry. We are constantly learning from restaurateurs to better understand what keeps them awake at night so we can find solutions for those challenges. This creates a great work environment, because the company is evolving just as quickly as the industry.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the LevelUp story. Tell us more about the business.
LevelUp works with nearly 100,000 restaurant locations to help them drive more order ahead orders and engage their customers. We do so by connecting guests and restaurants. On the one hand we partner with order ahead providers to ensure we can list their restaurants for our users. And on the other hand, we promote those restaurants to our 1MM+ monthly active users via the LevelUp app, merchant-branded experiences and through our partner’s properties like Chase Pay, Facebook, Google and more.
What has been the proudest moment of your career so far?
The proudest moment of my career has been growing the marketing department and figuring out how to build the best team that will meet the needs of the business. I am proud to work alongside a stellar team of incredibly smart people who are tackling real challenges for the business.
