Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian McCarthy.
Brian, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I worked for a large Computer Company and I felt like I was just a number. Not a very satisfying job and not challenging enough….So, in 1998, I decided to try real estate….and the rest is history. I work for a large firm here in town, and quickly became of the top brokers in that office. Then, after a few years of doing well and winning awards/trips, I decided to break out on my own, starting McCarthy & Associates Real Estate in 2001. It was a struggle at first, when 9/11/01 hit our country hard and the economy slowed down for a short while, but I made it thru that tough time.
When the real estate market picked up, things were booming. There were great years from 2002 thru 2007, then the great recession hit. Business went straight down and the banks were limiting everyone’s credit, including mine. After a few tough years, I grouped up with a long-time friend who had seen his real estate company fall on bad times, and he closed his office. A few months later, he came into my office and asked me if I wanted to group up and start a new business together. I said “sure”, and in 2009, we became McCarthy & Gratta Real Estate. The real estate, and the economy, took a few years to really recover, and it finally did starting in mid-2012, and has been great ever since……There is more, but that’s the majority of it.
I have also been Chairman of the Council on Aging here in town
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I stated, the real estate industry has its ups and it has its downs, you have to be ready for everything, and you have to budget your money very well. I leaned a few great lessons in the Great Recession (2008-2011), and will be ready if/when it takes a down turn in the future.
Please tell us about McCarthy & Gratta Real Estate.
We are a local Real Estate Company servicing the South Shore of Boston, but we primarily sell homes in the Hull area….Very sought after area….Hull is a peninsula with 32 miles of coastline including a 9 mile beach, famous Nantasket Beach. Hull is a very historic town as well with Fort Revere, where the French helped the colonists fight off the British in the late 1700’s. I am primarily a listing Broker and what sets me apart is that I do it all….marketing, open houses, etc.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in the city of Boston (Roslindale) and my parents bought a summer cottage in 1962, and my family came for the summers when I was a kid. Those are my best memories….fishing/swimming/boating/playing games on the street with the other “summer kids”. My parents met on Gunrock Beach here in Hull. They both grew up in the city……Roslindale and Jamacia Plain sections of the city. They met on the beach in 1956, married in 1958 and bought the cottage 4 years later…..Great memories.
