Meet Michael Malyszko of Michael Anthony Photography in The Leather District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Malyszko.

Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was eight years old when I watched a print develop in my portrait photographer neighbor’s home darkroom. In the strange red light a submerged white sheet of paper turned into an image. It was magic! And I wanted a part of it. After a brief detour as a pre-med student at Penn, I landed a job as an assistant to a commercial photographer in Philadelphia. At the time I was hired he told me, “Two years and you should go out on your own.” And so I was. I spent a year traveling across the country by motorcycle and photographing every day (you learn a lot about light that way). I returned not to Philly but to Boston, where my future wife (and business partner, Judith Hughes) was finishing grad school. I started my commercial photography studio, Malyszko Photography, working for clients in the corporate, education and healthcare fields, either directly or through their ad agencies and design firms. A few years ago, we created a second studio brand, Michael Anthony Photography, in order to allow us to offer our services to the retail market.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A career is a marathon, not a sprint. If you’ve got equal parts talent, drive, and business acumen, and stay true to your vision, you can overcome the inevitable bumps along the road.

Michael Anthony Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are known for photographing people, both “real people” as well as actors and models playing roles in set up situations. Some shoots will have us going into a university or a company and capturing the everyday goings on there. Other assignments will entail my wife and producer partner, Judith Hughes, arranging talent, stylists, locations, etc. to create an environment that looks believable and appropriate to the job. Under the guise of Michael Anthony Photography, we now offer similar services to retail clients, whether to shoot formal or environmental portraits, weddings, or events. We photograph couples, families, business people, anyone who wants to look good. In each of these circumstances, what sets us apart is our unobtrusiveness and the easy rapport we establish with our subjects. We get them to relax, have fun, and look their best on camera.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
We pulled up stakes and lived in Paris for a year with our 10 year old daughter and our two dogs. At the end of our stay, we photographed our dogs all around the city. Upon our return to the states we sent a book proposal out to Chronicle Books. Lo and behold, “Betty and Rita Go to Paris” was born, and quite successful, selling more than 40,000 copies and being translated into German, Japanese, and Mandarin.
