Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Worcester.
Seth, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Coming off a 25 year career of teaching, coaching and living with adolescent boys in western Massachusetts, a change of pace was in the air. Little did I know working at Sperry Fabric Architecture was going to be the next best move for me.
Growing up in and around Buzzards Bay, Sperry Sails and Sperry Tents was all around. And here I am working with Matt Sperry creating unique residential tension awnings to intricate Savannah series tents, some as long as 120′.
My first assignment was to work in the wood shop. I did come equipped with carpentry skills yet I needed to learn how the product was built and how it came together. I needed to learn the business from the ground up. I was exposed to metal fabrication and some of the nuances involved in that art. As I moved in to the fall season I went on many take down trips and started to go out on measuring jobs with Matt. By November I was working in the office, answering inquiries and following up with clients that Matt could not keep up with. I took a CAD class at RISD in January. Since then, I have sold, designed and installed about 30 projects.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The challenge is getting it right. There are many parts to the process, from measuring, to designing, to wood choice color and finish to fabric design and production. Not to mention footings and unforeseen obstacles, such as what’s underground or what’s behind attachments points …You can’t be too careful.
Sperry Fabric Architecture – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Sperry Fabric Architecture design, builds and installs fabric structures. We only do custom work where it is all about fulfilling the needs of the client.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
The greatest personal success was Chatham Shark Center. That was my first design and install that I did entirely on my own. With that said, and this includes The Shark Center, it is the client that makes the job successful. It is through their kindness, collaboration and compassion through the whole process that makes it fun. At the end, when they have come to realize their envision is now a reality and they are pleased with the outcome, then I am fired up! That’s the goal.
However, it’s the people at SFA that make the bottom line difference. Matt is a creative and can do person and he has hired talented people who are much the same. They know their craft, care seriously about what they produce and love to figure out the best way to tackle issues. There is much knowledge and experience surrounding me, which I lean into heavily, all the time.
