Today we’d like to introduce you to Watertown ’s Greg’s Restaurant .
So let’s start at the beginning – how’d you get into the restaurant business?
As far back as I remember I knew I was going to join the family business. As a kid I was always in the restaurant. It was part of my life before I even understood what a job was. To me it was a no brainer to continue the history. The pride you get when you give someone the perfect meal is incredible. Good food just makes people happy. But way before I came along, my family was making a name for themselves. My Great Grandmother Rose Diliberto opened a market at the site in 1933. Rose and her husbad Charlie were immigrants from Italy searching for the American Dream. As the years went on the market turned into a restaurant. Around 1960 Rose’s son Greg took over and changed the name. Greg was a people person. He greeted everyone that stepped through the door and they all loved him. When he got sick, my Father Paul and Uncle John started running the place in their twenties. They are both still there today, cooking and overseeing the establishment. It’s truly a family businees. Now in the fourth generation Paul and John have five kids between them. As well as a few grandkids. All five of us work in the restaurant which makes the dynamic something you can’t just hire. We all have pride in our family and our history. As the future unfolds we plan to continue to make people happy by putting out meals that others simply can’t compete with. If you haven’t yet, give us a try. You won’t be disapointed
What have been the biggest challenges you’ve faced over the years?
Challenges arise everyday for pretty much everybody in the world. Some big, some small. You need to learn to overcome and believe in yourself. Personally I’ve always been motivated to succeed and am a bit of a perfectionist which keeps me constantly going forward. If you want something bad enough, you will overcome any challenge life throws at you.
What stands out about Greg’s Restaurant ?
What makes us stand out from the crowd is our desire to maintain quality over all else. Everything you get is fresh and made in house. The food has never changed, period. It’s the same thing people were coming in for fifty years ago. We’ve had everyone from politicians to mobsters walk through our door over the years and they all left with a smile. The key to success in the restaurant business is consistency. When you walk into Greg’s you instantly feel comfortable. It’s homey and cozy, especially in the winter time. Not much has changed at Greg’s over the years and that’s why people come back. When it comes to old school Italian spots, Greg’s is the last of a dying breed.
