Check out the Ham & Swiss Croissant at swissbäkers in Harvard business schooll – Allston, MA, & Reading Depot – Reading, MA & Boston Public Market, Boston, MA.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Harvard business schooll – Allston, MA, & Reading Depot – Reading, MA & Boston Public Market, Boston, MA. ’s swissbäkers .

Please tell us about how you got started in the restaurant business.
Helene and I grew up in a family business in Switzerland. Thomas carried wood to heat the oven for his fathers wood oven bakery.
We both did the apprentice in the Bakery and hotel industry and did all the master degrees etc.
After that we traveled the world and opened hotels and restaurants around the world until we ended up in the greater Boston area. Which we liked so much that we settled here 18 years ago.
We started baking in our house 10 years ago. 7 years ago we opened a small bakery in the Reading train station, since all happens in the train station in Europe. 5 years ago Harvard called and told us they heard about us and are looking for an anchor store in the Allston area for a new development. They knew we were looking for a production place closer to the city and that we were doing authentic Swiss baking/cuisine.
The rest is really history. We opened in March 2013 our home base, 168 Western Avenue in Allston, MA. A state of the art production facility with a café of 100 indoor and 40 out door seats, as well as a kids play ground and 55 parking spots, right off the Mass pike and the Storrow drive. Across the street from the Harvard stadium and the Harvard business school.
in October 2015 we opened our 2nd kiosk in the Boston Public Market @ 100 Hanover Street in Boston.
We have three revenue channels: – Cätering -Retail and -Whole sale.
We only higher food loving guest huggers. Since we strongly believe food is a highly emotional business, you are not coming to us because you are hungry, (you have thousands of options) you come to us because you like us.
Everything you buy from us is made that day and is “clean” no conditioner, additives etc. in it. We only work with organic sugar, unsalted butter and cage free eggs. All local.
We have a green philosophy: “all we do has to be grand child sustainable.” = Has a good or no impact in our grand children’s world.
We believe in enjoying the moment that is why we have our tag line: “made for the moment.”
our plan is to grow swissbäkers into the greater Boston area to celebrate good and healthy food, enjoying every moment. Your life happens today.

Has it been a smooth road to get to where you are today?
We all have them, daily. But if you have a vision you just follow it and embrace every challenge, since the only consistency in life is change.
Our business (the food and service business) is the only one with immediate reward. You have a grumpy guest coming in. “hug” him/here, have them leave with a great croissant and coffee and a smile. isn’t that immediate reward?
Our vision was always since we had mentors in our whole life, to mentor young people and create jobs.
Do what you like in life and you’ll be good at it. We like to serve and make people feel good.

The biggest challenge was and always will be, to find the right crew members. To help us grow the business. We call them co-entrepreneurs which share the same service and quality believes.

Of course you also have to be very creative in financing your ideas.

Tell us about what makes swissbäkers special or unique?
It is like visiting Switzerland without leaving MA. all our food is totally fresh, baked in front of your guests, even in our kiosk locations. The biggest asset are our team members – guest huggers. This is the only Bakery Café, where you get the real soft and 100% authentic pretzels, pretzel rolls etc. Also our Berliners will make you hooked since you can eat three until you hit the calorie count of a donut. Our Choco weggli is to die for. It is a not sweet roll and we work Swiss chocolate chips into it an decorate it with pearl sugar. In Switzerland you do not eat chocolate without bread – it enhances the flavor of the chocolate.

yes the ambiance is bright, light airy and still warm despite the contemporary design.
