Today we’d like to introduce you to North Shore’s Karl’s Sausage Kitchen & European Market.
What’s the Karl’s Sausage Kitchen & European Market story? The who/what/when/where/why?
In 2017 Bob and Anita Gokey purchased the business and quickly started to expanded the deli and grocery items offered. As Karl’s had been around since 1958, the business had a loyal following but had not grown much in the past 20 years. The core of the business was the production and sales of authentic German sausages and the sale of imported cheeses, breads and chocolate. We set out to expand the products we offered. Our customers loved the new products and started to tell their friends about Karls. Just a few years later we needed a larger location.
So in 2012 we moved to our new location at One Bourbon Street in Peabody. The new store was larger allowing us to expand our selection of European deli meats, imported cheeses, and grocery items. We also added a cafe with German Beer, Swedish Cider and Austrian wine. The cafe’s core menu is authentic German cuisine with a casual, family friendly vibe.
In speaking with any restaurateurs I’ve come to learn that the restaurant business can be brutal. How has it been for you? What’s been the hardest part?
Our biggest challenges is always staffing. Finding and retaining staff who understand the level of product quality, and customer service that our customers have come to expect. We offer great benefits and team environment.
What we love about independent, non-chain restaurants is that the independents bring new ideas forward. What’s interesting or unique about Karl’s Sausage Kitchen & European Market
What makes us unique is our extreme focus on serving authentic German cuisine. Recipes are tried and true German recipes that have been proven over the years. In fact even our new recipes often come from friends or family members who share their family recipes with us.
