Today we’d like to introduce you to Timothy Higgins.
Timothy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I went to school part-time for massage therapy back in 2004 in an attempt to create a source for part-time income. I finished school in November 2006 and took part-time massage position with a new massage franchise that was just launching nationwide. I worked for them for 3 years, fell in love with the business and started looking into opening a franchise location of my own. I went thru all the preliminaries right up to submitting small business loan application only to have the massage franchise corporate office pull the agreed to territory from me and award it to an existing franchisee. I decided, along with my wife, to try and make a go of it on our own. In retrospect, it may have been the best thing that could have happened to me as far as opening a massage studio.
Has it been a smooth road?
The initial few years were very tough. It was my first venture into opening my own business and I was very green when it came to the marketing portion of business. I have a background in accounting so the business end of things came easy. As far as advertising and online presence I was an extreme novice and wasted a lot of time and money on advertising programs that never came close to providing the clientele development or business growth they promised. Not having the guidance a nationwide franchise chain could have provided definitely slowed the growth of my business.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Body & Mind Therapeutic Massage – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Our focus is in therapeutic massage. While we do offer some spa type services, such as deluxe facial massage and hot stone massage our real expertise is in the therapeutic/healing types of massage. We have numerous therapists trained in Oncology Massage to help clients who are currently battling cancer. We also offer discounts to segments of the population that can really benefit from regular massage but may not be able to afford it, like senior citizens and kids. In fact our overall pricing structure is what sets us apart. Everyone can benefit from massage but as a large number of people know finding the extra funds in your budget to get massage can be very difficult. We make it our goal to make massage affordable for everyone.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Being located in Chelmsford Mass, where both I and wife grew up, was a goal for opening our business. We know the area and the people who live here and that’s who we wanted to work with. Negatives would be the restrictions the town sees fit to implement on small businesses. It would be my assumption that the town would do all it could to try and help small business grow and flourish. That doesn’t always seem to be the case.
