Today we’d like to introduce you to Jillian Price.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Our founder, Oliver Carr Jr., was involved in the commercial office, hotel and residential building business and as the office business grew, he noticed that small space users were not treated very well – that they were often relegated to the least desirable places in a building and not given much attention from the brokerage community. Having worked by himself in the past, he also realized the importance of community – how people have a unique need to engage and collaborate with others. It not only makes them happier, it makes them more productive. Carr Workplaces has grown now to 27 centers located across the U.S. including the 10 Post Office Square location in Boston.
At 10 Post Office, if you are someone who likes engaging with others regularly, there are events each week with a very friendly and welcoming community. But if you’re someone who likes to keep to yourself that is also respected.
Events throughout the year keep the community active, including happy hours, game nights, things like Fitness February hosted by a nutritionist and regular Lunch and Learns.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We are so fortunate to have such a great address. 10 Post Office Square is a location that is very desirable to all types of businesses due to being in the heart of the financial district, across the street from beautiful Norman B. Leventhal Park, and close to South Station. Because of these features, our thriving community and the demand for our services, square footage is one of our challenges.
Please tell us about Carr Workplaces.
We help businesses thrive by providing flexible office space to independent mobile professionals. We appeal to start-ups and small businesses because we have the services that allow them to be more productive and to work in a beautiful space that they might not otherwise be able to afford. They don’t have to sign a 5-year commercial lease. They can go month-to-month but still have a modern, serviced office that allows them to collaborate, socialize and network with others. What we’re most proud of and what sets us apart is our unique take on services and community. The services are indispensable to some Carr Workplaces members and we even specialize, so if we have a bunch of lawyers in a space, we might bring in legal support, a space for doc reviews and private space for depositions.
We pride ourselves on our value-focused All-Inclusive pricing which removes the surprise, nickel-and-diming factor, important for those businesses that need to budget for the year. Plus, while we are a collaborative workspace, we have a professional environment that allows for a certain level of privacy – a combination that can be difficult to find.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
There is risk associated with the growth of a company. We have been entrepreneurial over the years and with that came mistakes. But you learn by just going out and doing things and trying them. If you can be agile in the self-correction, growth and success will happen.
