Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Karibian.
Amy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a long-distance runner for over 30 years, I gravitated toward yoga as a way to relieve my body from some of the damage running had caused. I immediately fell in love with the gentle stretching and body strengthening that yoga has to offer. As I got deeper into my yoga practice, I knew I had to find a way to share this great feeling with others.
Opening up my own yoga studio seemed like the best way for me to share the benefits of yoga with the rest of the world.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Sometimes the pressure of being a sole proprietor can be a little overwhelming. Luckily, those feelings are fleeting and rare. As long as I advance confidently in the direction of my own dream (to paraphrase Thoreau), things usually run pretty smoothly.
Please tell us about Mystic Fitness.
Unlike most other yoga studios, Mystic Fitness offers a variety of different kinds of yoga classes. We have 15 instructors, and we offer about seven different kinds of yoga, so there is always something for every student to enjoy. Plus, nearly all of our classes are heated, some as high as 105 degrees, which is a terrific way to cope with New England winters.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Having been born and raised in a tough New York City neighborhood, my favorite memory as a child was when my mom would rent a car and we would drive to the Catskills. I loved running and playing outdoors in the tall grass out in the country.
