Today we’d like to introduce you to Scott Cassa.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Scott. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Cassa Health came about from my first hand experience realizing how important health and wellness is for everyone’s life. I was just getting started in life, I was beginning to choose a career path for my future when I suddenly faced an extremely serious and unexpected health emergency. This was not something I ever imagined I would have to face in my life. The battle back to full strength was a hard one and I was inspired by all the physical therapists, doctors and specialists that I worked with along the way. I decided it was important to me to help others live their best lives. Staying healthy and strong at any age is important. You never know what can come your way and personal health and wellness is a vital part of enjoying life to the fullest. I decided to focus on building a career in the health and fitness industry. After working for eight years for private fitness and personal training franchises, I decided it was time to step out on my own and I began to develop the Cassa Health fitness model. I found that what appeared to work best for people to truly reach and even exceed their personal health goals, was to help clients view fitness and wellness as a lifestyle. Regular fitness and wellness does not need to be a chore or an errand but a gift you give to yourself and your family on any level by; living healthy, staying active, working to reach health goals, maintaining healthy weight, becoming the best athlete you can be, increasing strength and stamina, overcoming health setbacks and so much more. I started with a small list of in home fitness clients in 2009 and then began to partner with condo communities and corporate businesses offering onsite fitness and erasing client’s needs to fit fitness into their busy schedules. I came to them on their schedule. My fitness programs were becoming available to many communities just steps out their front door. Over time word of mouth started to expand my client lists and I found a home base for my services in 2011 in Groton, MA, the community that I now live in. I teamed up with the owner of the Anytime Fitness in Groton and offer my services within the gym (no need to be a member to work with me there) I also continued to grow my in home and corporate clients. After the first year in business, I added associate trainers and fitness practitioners to my team.
With yoga teachers, nutrition specialists and sports specific trainers working as a part of Cassa Health I have been pleased with the menu of services and progression of added resources I am able to provide to clients. We have recently increased additional corporate wellness programming with group fitness and specialty info workshops, along with small group fitness boot camps and personalized nutrition programs that are web based for ease of access. It took a lot of knocking on doors and many finally opened for me to get started in the right direction to stay true to my model.
The style of training I offer is fully personalized. I spend a great deal of time writing workouts and fitness plans for people so when I am working with them one on one it is something designed for their goals alone. I keep programming fresh since I feel strongly that there is not any cookie cutter style for fitness that will produce long term success for every person. Building a healthy lifestyle with regular fitness can be life changing, so it needs to fit each person individually. I spent a lot of time in the early days stopping by potential vendor locations and simply introducing myself. It is exciting to look back at how a health hardship of mine actually became the positive catalyst for me to bring health and wellness to the lives of so many people.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
A challenge that I have come across would be balancing time. My clients list grew somewhat quickly once I set out on my own. At the same time, my family began to grow as well. It is a tricky balance to be a small business owner and organize working time with a young family. When you are starting a business, it is not at all 9-5 and it never will be. There is the freedom of working for yourself however you are a one person show and making it all work can have its difficulties. I am finding now over 5 years later how to work on that balance so not to over work myself or miss out on important family time.
Bringing talented staff on board with me has been a big help in finding this balance.
Melissa Matheson, now assists with the development of Cassa Health and has additionally become a talented associate trainer running nutrition programs, corporate workshops and group training offerings. It was important to find team members who hold true to the same holistic and individualized approach that I have been building through the years. I am lucky to have worked and continue to work with experts in the field.
Other challenges have been to find the best way to advertise. While it is easy to market my services at my vendor locations, being a mobile company requires outreach to a wide scope of potential clients. I have found that social media has opened the door for me on this issue. I can reach a large population of potential clients with posts, blogs, email mailing lists etc. The changing styles of connecting with clients moves fast and I look to keep myself moving along with these changes.
It makes me more available to interested clients in different ways.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
That is a good question. I think for me traveling with my family and spending time outdoors exploring up at lake Winnipesaukee and surrounding areas.
