Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanya Zucker.
Tanya, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always known that I wanted to be a hairdresser from a very young age. My mother’s two very good friends were stylists one owning her very own salon named Charlotte s, at a very young age they both took me under their wings. I spent many hours in the salon as a young girl dusting cleaning and organizing rollers and perm rods at the time thinking that was the best thing ever to do. August of 1993 I started my own journey at Blaine Hair Academy in Boston, weeks later Charlotte offered me a job as one of her night time/weekend front desk coordinator s. May 1994 I began to build my own clientele as I never wanted to work in the town I lived in but once I started with Charlotte I knew that was where I was meant to be. 2000 my brother Ray bought the Salon from Charlotte after leaving the Military he was working in Hawaii for Aveda Hair and Skincare owned by Este Lauder then in 2005 I took the Salon over. Charlotte who has always been my biggest inspiration and mentor held my hand through all the changes of being an employee to now being the boss, she truly is one of my most important people that has influenced my life if it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t be where I am today. 2008 I moved the salons location across the street to a newly renovated location.
My husband Scott is a local contractor who took my ideas and dreams, lots of long days, nights, sweat and tears on my end and made my dream of a beautiful salon a reality. I then had one final change to make it feel 100% mine. The name one of my very long time clients and I were discussing the change one day and she said can I go home and brainstorm this idea for you. The next day she sent me an email and said TAJ it’s your kids initials and has significant meaning to you. I honestly thought wow that’s exactly what the new name will be Salon TAJ after Tessa (9) Ava (12) Jake (15).
Today, I employee 15 amazing talented women. Some have been there longer than me and Charlotte to this day is not only my inspiration and role model that I started as her employee but she is still my employee and has been by my side through this amazing journey.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I am very lucky to have a very supportive team behind me, without them and all of the amazing talent I would be nothing. Each team member brings so much to the Salon they are all so different from each other. I can honestly say we all are very good friends and get along very well. I know people have a hard time believing that a bunch of women working together and everyone gets along. I’m a firm believer of positivity and positive energy.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Salon TAJ loves to give back to the community we are involved in Scituate s Community Christmas where we collect gifts for local kids in need. A few members of my team donate our time in making clients feel beautiful who may have a lot going on in their personal life. A small time away to rejuvenate and pamper themselves on us. We are also involved in locks for love where we donate our time to cut 10+ inches off someone’s hair to donate to local charities. I’m most proud of my team members who help clients transition from a full head of hair to hair loss due to chemo or radiation, it’s the toughest part of our job but rewarding knowing these people pick us to help them through a very difficult time in their life. We are most known for our love of color. Most of my team specializes in multi-dimensional hair coloring that best compliments their skin tone.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I’ve always been a very outgoing person, I’m the type of person that’s always on the go can’t sit still too long with the urge to travel a few times per year.
