Today we’d like to introduce you to Lucas Nichols.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Lucas. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I have been a carpenter since I was in high school and wanted to be one even before then. My father renovated our summer cottage while we were living in it so I drew quite a bit of interest in the trade during that time. I worked for a local contractor through college and afterwards spent some time on my own doing small jobs around my hometown. I wanted more experience and to refine my skills so I ended up taking a job with SH Construction based out of Cambridge, MA. They are an amazing company with amazing people and it was an invaluable experience. It led me to take a more management orientated position down in Washington DC where I was a Production Manager for a high end design build firm. I always knew that I wanted to start my own business but that experience is what really triggered my urgency to do so. I launched Long Pond Custom Builders LLC in the Spring of 2016 and haven’t looked back! My goal is to offer high end contracting and carpentry services to the Plymouth and South Shore area all the while trying to find like minded crews, subcontractors and employees who share my goal to do so.
Has it been a smooth road?
It is absolutely nothing like I thought it would be. In hindsight, I am not sure what I thought the experience of owning a business would be like or if I truly cared. I just knew it was something I had to try and give my absolute best shot at making it happen. It’s been a smooth road at times and generally, as soon as everything is going right something inevitably goes wrong. The most consistent struggle is and finding people who want to dedicate themselves to the trade and the company. That will be an ongoing struggle. Aside from the lack of time to get everything done all the struggles and obstacles present opportunities to learn and troubleshoot which I take great enjoyment in!
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We offer high end contracting, remodeling and carpentry services. Whether it’s a new deck, bathroom or comprehensive home remodel we take pride in our work and dedicate ourselves to the project and client. I like to think there are thousands of ways to get from day 1 of a project to the end of job. The final product might be exactly the same but the experience and how you got there is where our focus is. This means constant communication with subcontractors, adjusting the schedule and working with clients to make sure they are never in doubt and always enjoying the process. All said and done we strive to make every project a positive experience for everyone involved, that takes extra work and is what I hope sets us apart.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Plymouth and the South Shore is tough unless you have an existing network. I grew up here so it was an early transition in. Boston and the more metropolitan parts of Mass lend themselves to start ups a little bit more because they offer volume. Then again start up and running costs might be more. I am a firm believer that you should work in the general area that you want to live. It’s important to be a member of the community, contribute, and build your network both on the personal and business front. Any city can improve by simply offering opportunities, forums, trade shows for business and so forth. Really, it’s up to the business owners to make these things happen and improve the composition of the city.
