Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Genzale.
Matthew, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I graduated from Boston University with a Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 2000 and went to work for a local, commercial General Contracting firm and worked there for 11+ years as a Project Manager, Senior Project Manager and Vice President.
Along the way, I was exposed to wide variety of commercial construction projects including retail, restaurants, sports complexes, medical office, dental office and R&D facilities and was fortunate enough to learn from some amazing teachers/co-workers.
Along the way, I met my wife, got married, bought our first home together, and with a baby on the way my wife encouraged me to trust myself, trust my experience, and to have faith in the vision I had about how to own and manage a successful contracting business.
On September 1, 2011, MRG Construction Management, Inc. became incorporated. The company was formed in the basement of my home with myself and two others as the only employees. We have seen our Revenues grow from $1.75mil, to $3.8mil, to $5.7mil, to $8.7mil, and to a 2016 Revenue of $12,5mil and now employ 16 full time employees.
Has it been a smooth road?
Some things have been easy, such as our revenue growth for the first 5 years. We very quickly realized that if you keep your existing customers happy and add some new ones along the way the growth comes quickly. We have a lot of great employees who work extremely hard every day to keep customer satisfaction our top priority.
But other aspects have been challenging… adapting to new customer needs, completing projects on time in an environment where customers are expecting shorter and shorter project schedules, defining and implementing new policies and procedures to make sure that we are delivering consistency to our customers, and managing an industry where customers are more frequently selecting a contractor first and relying on a design build approach rather than the normal Architect/Plans/Bid/GC Award process.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
MRG provides construction management, design/build, and general contracting services to a variety of commercial customers, including retailers, end users, developers, property managers, and private corporations to satisfy their potential tenant build-out, property improvements, and ground-up construction needs.
The success of MRG and its clients will result from of our wide range of construction experience, cooperative approach, and commitment to fostering healthy owner/contractor relationships by emphasizing communication and attention to detail throughout the pre-construction, construction, and close-out phases of each and every project.
I am most proud of our company’s reputation not only in our industry but also in our community. We are proud to partner with some great non-profit organizations that do a tremendous amount of good.
What sets us apart from others is the ability to bring the professionalism, technology, and efficiencies seen on larger projects to the smaller sized construction projects that fit within our niche.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Boston is an amazing city and the surrounding areas/suburbs offer a great deal of opportunity for start-up or small businesses. The booming construction economy in this area affords anyone willing to work hard, provide high quality, and professionalism to their customers a great chance to succeed.
I would absolutely recommend anyone start a business in this area. There is an amazing talent pool of college students/graduates as well as experienced industry professionals.
