Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanne Sargent R.N.
Joanne, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a nurse Health & Wellness has always been important to me. I have long been interested in what men and woman can do to “be our best selves”. Approximately 10 years ago friends of mine started sharing with me their journey of ageing and wondered why some individuals look younger than their stated age and some looked older. We began to discuss people we knew that were the same age as we were but were ageing differently and it occurred to me that Health & Wellness applies to the beauty industry as well.
I then decided to become certified as a medical aesthetician to bring education, knowledge, aesthetic treatments and technologies to my clients. As I considered what I should name my new venture, and thought back to the conversations with my friends I thought to myself it all begins with our skin. So I tested the name with them, Begin with Skin and they thought that name really was descriptive and appropriate.
Since then my practice has continued to grow largely based on the needs of my clients from skin care, to makeup lessons to Neuromodulators such as Botox and Dysport, Dermal Fillers to restore Volume, laser hair removal, skin rejuvenation, non-ablative skin tightening and my newest addition which I have been excited to offer clients is the FDA approved Sculpsure for permanent fat reduction using heat in 25 minutes.
I pride myself in listening to the needs and desires of my clients. I consider my practice to be conservative and I recognize that ageing is a process so many people want restorative services in a similar fashion. Looking restored and refreshed in a way that does not look overdone or obvious is important to me and my clients.
I spend a great deal of time education clients on the science of ageing and how our goal is to restore balance.
For me it is not about how much can I sell a client on a variety of services and quantity of services but what is right for each individual; offer a treatment plan and let them make an informed decision.
As a result I do not require “packages” of services I realize sometimes life gets in the way and I do not want to create a financial hardship for clients by focusing too much on the bottom line.
As a result of being fair and forthcoming, I have seen my practice grow exponentially.
Lips have become my brand, I have a lip chair, rug, lip milk chocolates for my clients and I have available client chocolate lollipop shaped like lips from a local candy store that I have custom made. People ask me “what’s with the lips”. I respond they are fun, now I have clients who find lip items and give them to me so I have a collection of lip items, it makes for a nice conversation piece and I feel it makes the Med spa environment fun and inviting.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I must say that is has been smooth sailing for me. As I compare this venture to others I have done I equate it to when people know that they can do things for themselves that makes them feel better and look better it is such an emotional boost. The phone is constantly ringing. I am fortunate, my husband and I own the building that we are in, I also do very little advertising and rely on referrals so my costs to deliver services are reflective of this.
My only struggle at this time is finding other team members to work with me that have the same work ethic, passion, expertise and willingness to educate clients rather than to sell to the clients. If we educate then they can make the best decision for themselves with our guidance.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
My plans for the future is to grow the business such that I can move it across the street to another location that I own. It is a historical landmark and the building is a carriage house. I think that to physically expand the business will help me achieve my goals for growth.
