Today we’d like to introduce you to Roy Avellaneda.
Roy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Pan Y Cafe opened in December 2016 in the former space of a long time Chelsea ice cream shop Sparta’s Spa. Located on one of the 5 corners of Cary Sq, Pan Y Cafe was designed with the idea that coffee shops have served as more than just a place to get coffee… but a place where people gathered to discuss the news of the day, where ideas explored, politics are argued and revolutions born.
While sipping a fresh cup of one of our coffees or espresso based drinks, sit back and read the inspirational words of those condemning civic complacency and indifference.
Offering a menu of fresh baked pastries, desserts and lunch options, Pan Y Cafe has something for all times of the day.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Most people already have their morning routine set and their spot to pick up their first cup of coffee in the morning. We are trying to break into a person’s regular shopping habit and give Pan Y Cafe a try.
Please tell us about Pan Y Cafe.
Pan Y Cafe focuses on providing Latin American style pastries, desserts and coffees.
Rather than focus on one particular country or style like some bakeries do, we take the traditional favorites from all countries and serve them to our diverse customer base. Our customers love that they can get the favorites from a wide spectrum in one place.
Nowhere else can you get a horchata and a Cuban sandwich for lunch or a Tres leche latte and arepa for breakfast.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I think we started offering lunch options much later than what we wanted to but we had to slowly and carefully train our staff to just our basic menu in the beginning. Now that we have our rhythm, additions to our menu are a lot quicker.
Pricing:
- Our delicious Cuban Sandwich is $5.99
- Our Homemade Flan (custard) $2.99
- Iced Horchata 20 oz $3
