Today we’d like to introduce you to Masha Sorkin.
Masha, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved to Brookline, Massachusetts in 2012 to manage a satellite office for a non-profit agency that I have worked for since 2006.
I was working for a wonderful therapy practice in Hingham, Massachusetts part time on top of my full time employment as providing therapy is my main passion. In 2014, I got into a bad car accident and needed to figure out how to work closer to where I lived.
I found an amazing and kind woman in Brookline who agreed to let me rent a space hourly while I built up a therapy practice of my own. She was even flexible and didn’t start charging me until I began to incur revenue.
I quickly jumped on any social media platform to begin marketing my practice. I stayed up all night several days during the week creating my webpage, a blog, as well as several other online interactive methods to reach potential clients.
I called every school and doctors office in the Brookline area and set up times to come in and meet with them so they learned about me and knew that I would be a reliable person to refer someone to if they were needing extra support.
I decided to work during hours that other people may not want to see patients as it would compromise their free time and personal lives. I saw people starting at 6:30 AM until 10:30 PM and all day on Sundays.
Slowly, between my online marketing and word of mouth, my practice began to soar and there weren’t enough hours in a day to accommodate all of the interested people.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has been a very difficult road to maintain a thriving practice while balancing my full time job and my own personal life. Different times of year bring less referrals or more frequent cancellations. Insurance companies don’t always fairly reimburse for the work that is done and then it becomes a moral struggle because I am a therapist who wants to help anyone and everyone and yet I still need this to be my occupation that I can support myself with financially.
Therapy with Masha, Inc. – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My business is a mental health therapy practice where I meet with children and adults individually, with their families and/or couples.
The way in which I distinguish my practice from many others is that I provide my clients more support outside of sessions such as emailing, calling or texting if they need something. I also continue to be flexible about my timing to accommodate people who work during the days or who have child care needs and can only attend on weekends.
Most of all, my style as a therapist I believe is something that I pride myself most on as well as sets me apart from others. I am genuine and I will always empower my clients to become stronger so that they don’t need to see me for the rest of their lives. My goal is to help my clients learn skills and gain confidence and to grow as people.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success for me is having a business that people continue to find valuable, that people refer others to and that does right by its clients. I feel that my success is directly correlated with the success of my clients outside of sessions. If my clients are seeing improvements even in the slightest, then I know I have successfully done my job.
