Meet Nur Kilic of Serenade Chocolatier in Brookline Village

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nur Kilic.

Nur, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I wanted to follow my passion of creating the best chocolates. From a young age, I was fascinated with chocolates and baking. At age 12 when I was living in Germany I took a baking class and have been creating confection ever since. At Serenade Chocolatier, we only make confections.

First I had to please my parents so I went to college and graduated as a mechanical engineer and worked for GE. My passion was calling me. Serenade Chocolatier was opened 1987.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We had 2 stores for 17 years, one was located in South Station in Boston. We closed the South Station store 4 years ago. The change of retail to online shopping was most effected at our South Station location. Brookline Village where we make all our chocolates has a very supportive community although we are always competing with the online shopping now too.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
We make all our chocolates in an open kitchen where as soon as you enter you are surrounded by the most exquisite aroma of chocolate. All our chocolates are made with the best ingredients, never artificial. Every item is handmade in small batches. We love to discover new fruits or exotic foods from the around the world. One of our most popular truffles is made with pure passion fruit. Another favorite is made with organic Turkish pistachios.

We make over 60 types of chocolates. Our dark chocolate is 72 % cocoa. We make many dairy free/vegan chocolates because dark is naturally dairy free.

We enjoy creating new ideas and chocolates. We have a fun unique chocolate piñata cake filled with our handmade chocolates that comes with a mallet to crack open the chocolate shell.

We just designed a Boston chocolate advent calendar filled with our dark chocolate or milk chocolate.

All our chocolates are made with great passion and love.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up all living all over the world. Elementary school was in Libya, middle school in Germany, high school in Venezuela. Living in so many diverse places shaped who I am and my interest in food and people. I always want to learn about how people live, what they eat, how they celebrate holidays, their traditions.
