Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Lawson.
Sarah, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
It really started with my father being an engineer and having three daughters. We always built things, and he would give us power tools for Christmas – not kidding. And I worked as a framer in the summer when I was in college.
But I’ve always loved houses and design, and mechanical systems. So after many years in the tech industry, I acted as the general contractor on a renovation project at my own home, and that was it – I was hooked. So I changed industries, starting out working for a builder who wasn’t that good a business man (I learned a lot), and then starting my own small construction company. I did that for about five years and then joined S+H as a project manager. A few years ago, I started working on operations for the company, and that led to the possibility of becoming the owner.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Well, it’s a lot of work to create the legal and financial framework to transfer ownership of a business – and it was all done nights and weekends! So that was a challenging year. Otherwise, it really has been a pretty smooth road. My professional experiences and challenges were preparing me for this job, I just didn’t know it.
S and H Construction – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
S+H Construction is a residential construction company that’s been in business for 40 years. We’re known for our top-quality craftsmanship, our technical knowledge, and our professional management of projects. So, to sum up: we build beautiful things that work, on time and on budget.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I’m most proud of that fact that we’re a great place to work. All of our strengths stem from that. People tend to stay here for a long time, and good candidates want to work here.
