Today we’d like to introduce you to David and Laura Salvo.
David and Laura, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My husband has always been involved in the food, sandwich and pizza business as a young boy in his family’s food business and has opened several on his own as an adult. I have always talked about a particular sub shop in North Reading where I grew up to my husband and expressed my interest if it ever became available for sale I would love to own it! Prayers answered. One day, my mother was swimming at her health club and had heard that the owner was retiring and passed along the information to me. Sure enough, we came to terms with the original owner and became the lucky new owners of this historical successful sub shop of 45 years. The Hornets Nest Sub Shop was named after the North Reading high school mascot The Hornets. We are conveniently located in close walking distance to the high school on Route 62 @ 134 Park Street, North Reading, Ma. The Hornets Nest Sub Shop first became famous for their hand shaved quality steak and cheese subs and has now added much more to the original menu such as fresh baked French loaf bread, fresh cooked turkey breast, fresh cooked roast beef, homemade chicken cutlets, meatballs, marinated grilled chicken, steak tips, homemade chicken salad, fresh salads, and hand tossed Italian pizza & calzones and much more…
Has it been a smooth road?
It has not always been easy, when we first took over the business 14 years ago just about 2 months after purchasing the business, our storefront was hit by lightning in a severe thunder storm. It closed us down for over 3 months. We were devastated. We did not know what was going to happen to the business. We renovated and installed new equipment which is what allowed us to extend the menu. The day we re-opened after the fire the lines were out the door and down the street. What a wonderful show of support from the community. We opened on the first day of business with two new sandwiches called “The Lightening” and “The Thunder” as kind of a joke which are now a couple of our biggest sellers to this day 14 years later…
We’d love to hear more about your business.
We are a small family owned sub and pizza shop but we like to think we are not a typical sub and pizza shop. We are very different from most sub and pizza shops as we actually make the majority of our food. Our Steaks are hand cut and shaved quality beef loins, our bread is freshly baked in house, our turkey and roast beef is made in house. Our chicken cutlets are hand pounded and freshly breaded. Our chicken salad is made from fresh chicken cooked in house as opposed to pre-cooked bagged chicken. Our meatballs are hand rolled here on the premises. We even make our own dough and hand toss our pizzas etc etc.
We are very proud to serve our customers quality fresh food in a friendly funny environment.
