Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Ostiguy.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I got my start in the landscaping industry when I was 17 years old. I started by working for other local landscape companies. I did this for about 6 years as I learned the ropes before starting my own business in 1996. When I started it was just me, a lawn mower and a pickup truck and all I did was strictly residential lawn maintenance and snow plowing. As time went by and I developed relationships with many great customers the company started to grow and I started to hire employees and bought more trucks and equipment. With the trust we developed with our growing customer base we were constantly receiving requests for additional services such as patio and wall installations and irrigation system installations. At that point, I thought it would be wise to start taking classes and learning all I could in these areas so we could start offering these services. That has led us to the point where we are now, a full-service landscape company that offers all aspects of landscape and hardscape installation as well as residential and commercial maintenance.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There are always going to be bumps along the road. Whether it’s the week when it seems like every truck and every piece of equipment you own all break down at the same time or it’s the month where it has rained out every day and you are drowning in work that can’t be done in the rain. The important thing is to stay positive, face one challenge at a time and always keep in the back of your mind that you will get through to the other side.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Ostiguy Landscape story. Tell us more about the business.
Ostiguy Landscape is a local landscape company that offers a full array of landscape, hardscape, irrigation and snow removal services. While landscape maintenance is the backbone of our business we also specialize in doing complete landscape makeovers. This is where our work can really shine. It’s especially rewarding to take a neglected landscape and come in and remove everything so we can start with a clean slate. We work with the customer to put together a design and then implement it by installing everything from paver driveways to lawn and plantings to granite steps and irrigation.
Being able to offer all of these services to a customer and then also maintain the property after the job is complete sets us apart from a lot of the competition. This simplifies the process for the customer in many ways. There is no need to deal with many different contractors which saves time and aggravation for the customer. It also eliminates any scheduling conflicts and finger pointing between multiple contractors.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I have been lucky in life in many ways. I have a great wife and three awesome daughters who have always been supportive of me and have always been a great source of strength for me. I got married and started a family right after I started my business. Knowing they were depending on me and wanting them to be proud of me always drove me to work my hardest and do my best which has ultimately led to my success.
