Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandi Carpenter.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
About 13 years ago, I took a trip to Disney World with at the time 2 children (I have 3 now). My youngest at the time was 6 months old. I realized pretty fast when I walked into the hotel room that there was so much stuff that I needed to have for my infant son that was not available at the hotel. I had nowhere to put him down safely, there was no highchair to feed him and the hotel only provided a pack n play for sleeping. My son definitely required a crib for sleeping. If he didn’t sleep NO ONE will be sleeping. I contacted the front desk and they told me about a company that rented baby equipment. I contacted them right away and got an exersaucer, high chair and full-size crib. All were delivered and exactly what I needed. I’m not sure how I would have gone through the trip without these items.
Once we arrived home, I couldn’t stop thinking about how great the idea was to deliver baby equipment to people who travel with babies. I wasn’t working at the time and thought I could buy a few key pieces of equipment and see how it went. My brother in law put a quick website up for me and I bought 1 car seat, 1 crib and 1 high chair. I received my first rental request within a week. It was for a car seat. To this day the biggest rental request is for our full-size cribs, car seats and high chairs!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road was tough and great. One of the biggest struggles is you generally only get repeat business from families for a couple years. Babies grow up! We are constantly having to reach new customers. We also have a bit of a lull in rentals after December. Most people don’t travel to Boston from January to March.
