Today we’d like to introduce you to Brian Thompson.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
TCW was founded by my father Bruce Thompson in 1989. He started out as a one man shop in Danvers MA and added a few employees over the years. I grew up in the shop learning things from my father. I started out sweeping and cleaning up at young age, by the age of 14 I was helping with cabinet and furniture assembly and installation. Today I work side by side with my father and other family members like my wife and my little sister.
Over the years we moved locations a few times and are now located in Winchester which is more centrally located to Boston and many of our clients. We love the area. It’s only 15 minutes to downtown and has a lot to offer.
We specialize in a wide variety of furniture and mill work. My true passion is furniture making. From the concept, meeting with clients and the production of the final piece. Every table, chair, sideboard, bed you name it is different and every piece of wood is different. No two are alike. We work with lots of reclaimed woods and incorporate many other elements into our furniture and we love thinking outside the box to come up with new designs.
We also do large scale furniture and mill work projects. Right now, we are working on the new Boston Chops restaurant going into the theater district. We will be providing all the mill work for both levels of the amazing new upscale eatery. We also do luxury kitchens, built inns, custom doors and many other types of mill work.
Our goal is to create heirloom quality furniture that is passed down from generation to generation. We hope someday 100 years from now someone walks into your great grandchild’s home sees a piece of our furniture and says is that a TCW original? Nothing would make us happier.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
In business there are always ups and downs. The recession hit us really hard late in 2009 but we were able to hang on grow the company and come back even stronger.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Many companies specialize in only a few areas. We try to excel at everything we do and offer far more than most.
Homeowners, designers and contractors love working with us because we are a one stop shop. We provide the mill work, the cabinetry, all types of furniture and have excellent resources for metal, glass, upholstery and all types of other materials needed for high end homes and today’s architecture. So instead of having to go three, four or five specialty shops we can provide it all right here.
Of all things I’m most proud of I would have to say it’s our nearly 30 years of being in business and beating the odds.
What were you like growing up?
My parents would tell you I was a little wild as a child and needed to be focused on what I really wanted. I played many sports like baseball, hockey, football, swimming, basketball and even some soccer. I was and still am a bit of a thrill seeker. I loved downhill mountain biking and snowboarding and spent many days in the park or the back country getting stuck in the deepest powder we could find.
Now at the age of 34, with a wife and three kids I take things a little easier. No more park or downhill. I spend as much of my free time as I can going out on the boat fishing with my family and friends or hanging out at the beach. My children are a little young for sports but I can’t wait for the 5 am hockey practices and early morning trips up north to find fresh powder.
