Today we’d like to introduce you to Lyudmila Teshler.
Lyudmila, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Moving from New York to Massachusetts was a professional challenge. I left behind a small, but thriving private practice, a wonderful school job and many talented colleagues. Balancing family, parenthood and adjusting to a new city took some time and effort. Once I got my bearings, I started working on establishing my career in the Boston area. I was fortunate enough to gain employment in one the largest and best known Occupational Therapy practices in the area. There, I met my business partner Anastasia Ivanenko. We often worked late in the evenings and on our way through a dark parking lot we spoke about creating a place that would be our own; an occupational therapy practice that resonated with our ideals and beliefs about the best possible care. I always knew that I wanted something that was my own. Anastasia had many years of experience working in a variety of settings and was ready to take on a new challenge. As things continued to evolve in our professional and personal lives, it became clear that a private Occupational Therapy practice is where we wanted to be. With a clear vision, and sheer determination KidLink Therapy shifted from an idea into reality.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Finding a space that was appropriate for our clinic was challenging, We visited many buildings in the Lexington area and most were either out of our price range or were not open to having children in their establishments. After months of searching, we were finally able to find a space that we could convert into an occupational therapy clinic. Anastasia and I were on a shoe string budget and we had our family members help out with the construction of the sensory gym. My father and husband helped us install our first suspension system. Anastasia’s husband builds us a ball-pit that so many children enjoy. We encountered challenges, but with the support of our families and colleagues we pulled through.
Please tell us about KidLink Therapy.
KidLink Therapy is a pediatric occupational therapy clinic located in Lexington, MA. In our clinic, we see children with a variety of challenges from feeding concerns to Autism Spectrum disorders to kids having difficulties with dexterity and writing. We use sensory integration treatment approach as a primary therapeutic tool.
What sets us apart from other clinics is the approach we use with our clients. We develop strong relationships with the families in our care. We speak to teachers and doctors who are involved in the child’s life. We strive to set realistic and relevant goals for treatment. We built a team of great therapists who share our ideals and strive to provide the best possible care. We are proud of the growth this small company is making, and the reputation it has acquired after only a few years of practice.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I don’t think I would have done anything differently. Establishing this practice fulfills my intention of truly helping people in a meaningful way. I am lucky to have a wonderful person and a knowledgeable therapist for a business partner. We have great therapists working alongside of us. What I am mostly grateful for are the families who trust us with the care of their children and the many hours they spend implementing home programs and doing OT homework.
