Meet Sal Currao of Sal’s Masonry in Essex County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sal Currao.

Sal, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a third generation Mason. I started working with my dad at 8 yrs. old on the weekends and in the summer on school vacation. When most kids were out playing and sleeping in, I was earning a day’s pay and helping my family out. I had the pleasure of working closely with my Grandfather and father on the job sites growing up. I started being a foreman in my teens and started my own company at 19 yrs. old. I worked 5 days a week for my father and weekends on my own. You could say I was breed for this line of work. I worked 6-7 days a week in the rain /snow/ cold/heat. Working for family the pay was never the best. Never paid vacations or sick days. I was taught that if you wanted something, you had to work for it. All my work experiences have taught me to attack life’s hurdles straight on. I never hesitate to take on any project. I never get over whelmed in the work place. Some mornings I wake up with the sorest muscles and it will be raining out and cold, but never the less I go out and make a day’s pay. I’ve meet some amazing people along the way. I enjoy interacting with my customers and building relationships. I can say that my kindness and hard work ethic is how I got to where I am today.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I like to think positive and say it’s been a smooth road. In reality, there has been some bumps in the road. Being young and trying to score jobs is not easy. For many years I always had to explain to people my life story in order to get work. I was always asked, How old are you? Are you able to really do this work? At the end, I always surpassed everyone’s expectations. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve been asked how old I am. Most times it was the first thing out of my customers mouth. In the beginning, I had to charge really cheap prices just to get work.

Working for my father and running my own business was never easy. I had to juggle working for two businesses every day. I would use my lunch break to communicate with customers and order materials. Most days I never ate lunch. Never mind that most suppliers are closed early on Saturdays and closed on Sundays. Sometimes I would have to pick up tons of materials just to dump them somewhere just to pick them up again another day just to get rid of junk from jobs. Basically, doing the same work twice. When I was done working a 10 hour day I would go out and continue working for my company at night. I remember some projects bringing out lights or using my head lights on my truck just to get a job done.

Some days I would wake up so tired, but never the less, continued to go to work.
