Meet Jotham Busfield of Think-diff Institute in Lexington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jotham Busfield.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jotham. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
We are a mother/son team who formed the company in 2013 with the goal of creating an environment where clients can feel comfortable and get results, and this started with our office design. We have always felt that a lot of waiting areas are uncomfortable and awkward, so we designed our space to be flexible, accommodating, and filled with choice. Clients can grab a coffee and a snack while connecting to Wi-Fi, they can sit by themselves in a nook, or they can converse with others if they choose, but they have that choice, and this improves the overall experience prior to a session.

We had planned to wait a bit longer to start the company, but in the fall of 2013 we came across the perfect space in Lexington center and jumped at the opportunity, and our company has been growing ever since. We love what we do, connecting with clients and getting results!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Running a family owned business has challenges for sure, but over the past four years, we have learned a lot about ourselves and what it takes to be successful. Our decision to start before we were fully prepared put some pressure on building the business in the first six months, but sometimes jumping in can prevent the “analysis paralysis” that often stops entrepreneurs from ever starting.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Think-diff Institute story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a counseling and coaching practice, so most of our work is with individuals, couples, and families looking to improve their quality of life. What sets us apart is our enthusiasm and ability to flexibly use a blend of counseling and coaching. This blended approach enables us to connect and get results with each client. We are most proud of the feedback and referrals we get from clients, as it validates the work we do.

What sets us apart from most therapists is our style, we are active and provide feedback. One complaint we hear a lot from clients about past clinicians they have worked with is “they just sat there and didn’t really respond with any constructive feedback.” We believe that all clients have their own answers, sometimes these answers need to be creatively unlocked. We do this by actively listening, asking the right questions, and at times using feedback to generate motivation. We listen in the right way, but our default approach is not to simply be a sounding board, and our clients appreciate that.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
That is a great question. I think the concept of luck is often mischaracterized as good or bad. When positive things happen, it is usually because a lot of hard work went into positioning for success, not just sheer luck. When challenges take place or things don’t go our way, there is ALWAYS a learning experience built-in, something we can take from the process in order to improve, get better, and position ourselves for future success. Failure gets a bad rap, as it is the single most necessary component of success. Without failure, it is impossible to both achieve and enjoy success.
