Meet Miles Masci of Perfect Fuel in Norwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Miles Masci.

Perfect Fuel was founded by Nicolas Warren and Miles in 2011. Nicolas developed the initial idea for energy chocolate after not having his ginseng and cacao available before a triathlon. The Perfect Fuel Chocolate- Ginseng product launched in 2012 and was greeted with great retail success, expanding to all the Whole Foods in the North Atlantic region by the end of the year. The notion of healthy snacking chocolate for energy was born.

In 2013 an Indiegogo Crowdfunding campaign raised $16,907 to help launch two new products to the Perfect Fuel product line, Espresso and Chia. The brand also received amazing endorsements from Olympic Athletes and triathletes. Perfect Fuel even sponsored the PFC Elite triathlon team. Using all organic ingredients, and only 3 grams of sugar resonated for these athletes and young professionals looking for healthier options that taste good.

In 2014 Perfect Fuel expanded its reach to stores in Northern California and New York, ending the year in over 250 stores. During this time final formulation and manufacturing were coming together for the new products and new packaging. 2015 marked the official launch of these products to great success. The customers loved them and appreciated the options on the shelf, as well as the move to Fairtrade.

In 2016, after 5 years Nicolas and Miles decided the brand needed a bigger platform and sold the brand to Home Market Foods in Norwood, MA. The Home Market Foods team has continued to support the brand and connect with more customers throughout the US and New England. They continue to encourage everyone to snack healthy and stay fueled with Perfect Fuel.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Definitely not a smooth road. First we had to sell the idea. For anyone, from vendors to investors to take us seriously, they had to buy into the vision of the brand and the product. We ourselves were passionate and we honed our pitch until people saw the opportunity.

Second, we had to produce the product, which in itself has lots of moving parts from sourcing and production to design, packaging, and logistics. We made hundreds of calls and traveled the country to make this happen.

Third we had to sell the product into retail. Buyers at stores are overwhelmed with products and have particular difficulty with unique products like Perfect Fuel, which does not fit neatly into the chocolate category since it is an energy product.

Lastly, we had our marketing challenges, letting the world know that we existed and cutting through the clutter and noise that envelops us every day. During the summer we were very visible at local road races in Boston, and run regular promotions in retail.

Not a day went by when there was not a bump in at least one of these roads.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Perfect Fuel – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
